On This Date in Sports History…The Say Hey Kid Hits #500!

Willie Mays is without a doubt one of the greatest baseball players to ever live! He played the majority of his career with the NY/SF Giants and was traded to the Mets toward the end of his career. In the middle of that long career he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War, leading to him taking 2 years off of baseball.

On September 13th, 1965 Willie Mays reached a milestone that many at that point could not reach. He hit his 500th career HR off of Don Nottebart of the Houston Astros. Willie went on to hit 52 homers that season and 660 home runs!

He was not just a HR hitter either, finishing his career with a .302 BA and over 3,200 hits. He was an All Star 24 times. 24 FUCKING TIMES he made the All Star team! That is incredible to play at such a high level or such an extended period of time! He also won 2 MVPs, 12 Gold Gloves, NL Rookie of the Year, and the 1954 World Series!

Willie will always be in the baseball GOAT conversation and for good fucking reason. Dude was a fucking legend!
