There are only two Catholic colleges that compete in the FBS in college football. Notre Dame and Boston College are those two colleges which led to the rivalry nickname, The Holy War.
They first met on September 15th 1975 with Notre Dame coming out on top 17-3. Since that first meeting the two schools have met a total of 22 times with Notre Dame winning 14 of those matchups.
This rivalry has produced some classics which is why it is still considered a rivalry. Notre Dame’s TV deals and other road blocks prevented the two teams from playing every year, but the rivalry has been renewed with Notre Dame moving to an ACC dominant schedule.
The winner of this game receives the Frank Leahy Memorial Bowl. It is a trophy named after Frank Leahy who coached at both schools during his career.
As the only two Catholic schools in the FBS this is a rivalry that I am sure will continue over the year.
