On This Date in Sports History…MLB’s First 40/40 Man

The 40/40 club is one of the more elite clubs in baseball. For someone to hit 40 HRs and steal 40 bases in a season shows a rare combination of power and speed that very few players have. This combination is so rare, only 4 players have ever achieved a 40/40 season. Prior to the 1988 MLB season Jose Canseco guaranteed he would hit 40 homers and steal 40 bases. He stayed true to his word.

On September 23rd 1988 Jose Canseco stole his 40th base of the season becoming the first member of the 40/40 club in MLB history. Canseco is more known for his power than his speed, which is probably due to the fact that he started juicing roids in his ass and lost some of that speed as he became a fucking mammoth.

He also did dumb shit like this during his career.

Jose had hit his 40th home run earlier in the month to achieve that half of the feat. On the season total he finished with 42 HRs and 40 SBs. Jose would go on to be named the AL MVP for the 1988 season after his historical year.

The other 3 members of the 40/40 club are Barry Bonds (1996), Alex Rodriguez (1998), and Alfonso Soriano (2006).
