College Gameday Location Pick’em-Memphis, Tennessee

Last week College Gameday was at the biggest rivalry in the FCS and they had the fucking man on the show. Pat Fucking McAfee! Pat is the definition of electric and he absolutely knows what the fuck he is talking about! This show is great as it is, but adding McAfee full time is one way that it could improve!

As for the game, NDSU pulled it out like I predicted pulling my Gameday prediction record to 5-2 this year.

This week, the crew travels to what might be the Group of 5 matchup of the year. Memphis and SMU. The winner of this one will be in the driver’s seat to represent the G5 in the NY6, but if SMU wins, there is an extremely outside shot that they will be in the Playoff conversation. They would need a lot to happen at the top, but there is always at least a chance when a G5 team runs the table.

Memphis, Tennessee
#15 SMU @ #24 Memphis

The SMU Mustangs, for the first time in over 30 years, are a good college football team. For the most part, SMU football has been a complete fucking joke since the “death penalty”. They could not field a competitive team for obvious reasons. They were bowl eligible for a few seasons in the late 2000s, but for the first time since the early 80s, the narrative on this team has completely changed.

In his 3rd year as head coach, Sonny Dykes has this Mustang team 8-0 and in prime position to compete for a NY6 bowl game. He was able to use the transfer portal to put a real competitive team together and his biggest catch was probably QB Shane Buechele. Buechele has over 2,500 yards passing on the season to go with 20 TDs. The high flying offense is a huge part of why the Mustangs are off to their best start in over 30 years.

Another huge part of this SMU offense is senior RB Xavier Jones. Jones has 884 rushing yards this year and 14 TDs plus another 2 receiving TDs! He has been ridiculous all year and he will be counted on quite a bit today as Memphis is giving up over 190 rush YPG this year. Jones is averaging over 20 carries per game I expect the Mustangs to use him A LOT today.

Memphis on the other hand has been ranked in the AP Poll in 4 of the last 6 years, but this is the first year where they have a chance to represent the G5 in the NY6. Their entire season is seemingly riding on this game and just like SMU, they will rely on a high flying offense to get the job done.

Memphis averages over 37 PPG this year and their only loss was a 2 point loss to a solid Temple team. Memphis is also led by a QB transfer in Brady White who has been fucking awesome this year! He has over 2,100 passing yards to go with 20 TDs and only 4 picks!

They also have a stud RB in Kenneth Gainwell who has been fucking nuts this year! He will most likely go over 1,000 rushing yards in today’s game and Memphis will rely on him quite a bit today to try and keep the ball away from SMU’s offense.

Both of these offenses are in the top 14 in the country in PPG, and because of that it will come down to the defenses today. Which defense will make the most plays? Memphis has been a little bit better than SMU in terms of points allowed, but SMU is averaging just over 2 TOs forced per game and that might be the difference today.

Brady White has been taking care of the ball all year, and he will absolutely need to continue that today. With the way both of these offenses operate, any TO will most likely turn into points. Shane Buechele has not been as good as White as he has 7 picks on the year so far. If Memphis can force 1 or 2 TOs and then use Gainwell to control the tempo of the game, it will be tough for SMU to use that offense to take this game over.

The one thing to keep an eye on for SMU’s defense is the front seven. They have been really good against the run this year, but they are also second in the nation in sacks per game. They are averaging over 4 sacks per game and the Memphis OL has not allowed a sack in the last 2 games for the Tigers.

For me, this game comes down to that matchup: the Memphis OL vs. the SMU front seven. They need to protect White while also opening up some holes for Gainwell to have any chance in this game.

I really like the chances of…

the Memphis Tigers! At home in their biggest game in a long time, the Tiger OL will find a way to win the battle in the trenches and Kenneth Gainwell will have a solid game, but Brady White will be the star today!
